On our first meeting, Edmund Sutton, our young and talented lighting designer, read Medea Material’s script and after realising it is a very strong and difficult text, he made a pause, raised his eyebrows and read out loud “my fingers are playing around in the” and kept silent as he read (vagina). “Why this text?” He asked me and I said “well, why not?” The more I read about it the more I like it. So I’d like to leave this quote of a conversation between Kluge and Müller:
Müller For me that story [Medea and Jason and the Argonats] was always really the first formulation of, the first epic depicting a colonisation.
Kluge Agressive trade
Muller Yes.
Kluge He steals, after all. He doesn’t conquer Colchis, but he takes away what’s most valuable.
Muller Yes, and Medea is really a collaborator, she helps him with the theft and she kills her bother, etcetera. It’s really a very political story, I believe but the material was treated really freely. It was something one was not supposed to talk about.
Kluge But to return to the collapse of Russia. Gorvachev said, a state is being stolen here. Marx says, the state is theft, that is to say, he imagines the state in terms of the property owners sitting down in parliament…
Why Medea Material? Because it connects different events in history, as there are still gangs all over the world sitting down in parliament. And the UK is not the exception. Or is it taxpayers?
